Inside Tabin

The 120,500 hectares Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a haven for nature lovers and a perfect hideaway. The evergreen vegetation with its many interesting rivers and waterfalls, the calls of unknown insects at night, the sound of cheerful chirping birds at dawn, all this relaxes and soothes the visitors’ minds. An experience to behold, a memorable stay.

Bird watching

Tabin is a bird-watcher’s paradise. About 42 indigenous families representing the more than 220 species of Borneo have been recorded here. Amongst them are at least seven of Sabah’s eight hornbill species; Blue-headed Pittas, Wren-Babbler, Borneon Blue Flycatcher, Scarlet Sunbird, and Everett’s White-eye. Rarely seen species such as the Speckled Piculet, Chestnut-capped Thrush and Thick-bellied Flower-pecker are found.

Wildlife

Tabin’s bio-diversity contains many significant species of Borneo's flora and fauna, some of which are endemic. There is a small breeding population of the highly endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros. A healthy population of Asian elephants is found. Orang Utan and other primates are plentiful and there is a large variety of carnivores, including the honey bear and the rare clouded leopard. The are also herds of deer, wild boar, civet cats, red leaf monkeys, pig tail macaque and long tail macaques.

Mud volcanoes

Tabin has several mud volcanoes and salt-water springs that are high in minerals of importance to wildlife. Frequently visited by animals and birds, the mud volcanoes are ideal locations to view wildlife or find evidence of their visits. The Lipad mud volcano is the one nearest to the main base.

Plant life

A large number of tropical plants thrive here, and some species are known for their medicinal and therapeutic properties. Many others remain to be discovered and researched upon.

Core Area

In the heart of the Tabin Reserve, its core, visitors have a chance of visiting an undisturbed primary lowland Dipterocarp rainforest, and with some patience one spots easily a wide variety of wildlife.
